After years of unbearable anticipation, Acadian punk quartet Peanut Butter Sunday<\/strong> (PBS for short) finally releases their self-titled debut LP. Listen to it HERE<\/strong><\/a> or buy it directly from the Acadian Embassy website HERE<\/strong><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Some say when life gives you lemons, make lemonade. But on their new, self-titled album, <\/span>Peanut Butter Sunday<\/b> forgoes the sunny citrus and reaches straight for the bottle of wine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Written and recorded in the wake of their explosion onto the francophone scene (semi-finalists at <\/span>Les Francouvertes<\/b> in 2023, an opening slot for <\/span>Green Day<\/b> at the <\/span>Festival d\u2019\u00e9t\u00e9 de Qu\u00e9bec<\/b>, tour dates with <\/span>P\u2019tit Belliveau<\/b>, numerous festival appearances), the anticipated full-length album finds the Acadian punk band from la Baie Sainte-Marie formed by musicians Michael Saulnier and Normand Pothier confronting new realities with middle fingers straight in the air.<\/span><\/p>\n

The toll of the grind \u2013 paying to play, eating too much Dollarama pasta, putting an insane amount of kilometers on Norm\u2019s mom\u2019s van \u2013 is omnipresent on the record, and the bitterness it sometimes breeds seeps straight into the songwriting.<\/span><\/p>\n

Compared to their pop-punk leaning EP, <\/span>Quoi-ce y\u2019a pour souper?<\/i><\/b> (2022), <\/span>Peanut Butter Sunday<\/i><\/b> embraces more of a midwest emo approach. Complex & intricate guitar riffs on songs like lead-up single <\/span>\u201cCompliqu\u00e9<\/b>\u201d and <\/span>\u201cJazz\u201d<\/b> channel more influence from <\/span>American Football<\/b> than from <\/span>Blink-182<\/b>, while the darker, aggressive tones on songs like <\/span>\u201cWeekend\u201d<\/b> and album closer <\/span>\u201c12345\u201d<\/b> are more in line with bands like <\/span>Thursday<\/b> and <\/span>Rites of Spring<\/b>.<\/span>

<\/span>While the music tends more Midwest, the lyrics, which always encapsulate the dialect of the Southwest (Nova Scotia, of course) lean more internal, abdicating lighthearted party jams for caustic and introspective texts. Slow burn album opener <\/span>\u201cContrare\u201d <\/b>sets the tone with a pronounced mix of denunciation and depreciation, while the shimmering <\/span>\u201cMarch\u00e9 la c\u00f4te\u201d <\/b>seeks solace in handing over the reins \u2013 \u201c<\/span>Dit moi exactly quoisse tu veux \/ C\u2019est toi qui halle les cordes \/ Shu rinque un enfant<\/span><\/i>.\u201d <\/span>\u201cVin rouge\u201d<\/b> uses bouncy major chords to disguise clever Acajonne word-play lyrics about drinking to escape, a theme extended in the riff-laden <\/span>\u201cMal de t\u00eate\u201d<\/b> \u2013 \u201c<\/span>Peux tu voir qu’erj care about erionne \/ Hai un mal de t\u00eate pi j\u2019veux poin parler \u00e0 anyone<\/span><\/i>.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the midst of a new era, however, grappling with change and existential crises, the anthemic drive listeners have come to expect from Peanut Butter Sunday remains. Prompting surefire sing-a-longs, <\/span>\u201cMermaid\u201d<\/b> daydreams about a simpler life underwater where there\u2019s \u201cno work, no job, just all play\u201d while <\/span>\u201cFort McMurray\u201d<\/b> delivers angular riffs that anchor a pervasive, chantable chorus.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Throughout, and as always, Peanut Butter Sunday stays true to themselves. Uncompromising, steadfast and stubborn, the band throws their weight into their own corner on this new record, remaining staunchly committed to doing things their way, on their own terms. <\/span><\/p>\n
